A Community-Led Street Makeover by UnboxingBLR

Since November 2024, UnboxingBLR has been leading the transformation of Church Street under BBMP’s “Namma Bengaluru, Namma Koduge” program. We’ve been working with stakeholders to reimagine one of the city’s most iconic streets with a focus on infrastructure, cleanliness, greenery, and above all, community participation.

Some of the work we’ve already done includes:

Replacing broken cobblestones
Replacing the streetlights
Adding and maintaining the street’s greenery
Hired more staff to keep the street clean
Installed dustbins (made of recycled plastic!)
We’ve also launched community clean-up drives, poster campaigns, and stakeholder meetups with residents and traders.
With support from BBMP, local residents, businesses, MOD Foundation, local Government authorities, and Let’s Be The Change, we’re building a blueprint for vibrant, liveable, and better-managed public spaces.
And we’re just getting started.

Frequently asked questions

What’s Already Been Done?

Church Street’s getting safer. Loose cobblestones and footpaths have been repaired, new greenery added (and regularly watered), and brighter streetlights now line the street. Hazardous metal rods have been removed to make walking easier, and the drains get cleaned regularly to keep things fresh and functional.

What About The Waste?

Church Street produces nearly 5000 kilos every day.Two dedicated sweepers now work through the 12-8pm rush, and six dustbins made from recycled material have been installed. To increase citizen awareness and participation, regular clean-up drives, plog runs, and poster campaigns are organised periodically.

Why Does This Matter?

In a fast-growing city like Bengaluru, streets like this remind us what’s possible when we invest in care, community, and collaboration. By keeping them clean, welcoming, and accessible, we not only boost local businesses but also build pride and make the city more liveable, one street at a time.

What’s Next?

We’re bringing in clear, and unique signage to make Church Street more accessible, and add some character. We’re also planning cultural events and community engagement through art, installations, and design to spark pride, connection, and a shared sense of ownership for Bengaluru’s public streets.
